Hiking in the DuPont State Forest in Western North Carolina
DuPont Forest is a 10,473 acre state forest located in Henderson and Transylvania North Carolina. The land was originally owned by the DuPont company which contained a facility to produce x-ray film. Two popular movies were shot in the area, the last of the Mohicans and The Hunger Games. There are 83 miles of multi-use trails and 6 major waterfalls. Brevard is the closest town and it has a number of restaurants and a great grocery store. We have spent several weeks in the area hiking over the last 6 years.
Our first stop in Dupont State Forest is always the High Falls Trail, which leads to a breathtaking 120-foot waterfall. The hike is moderate in difficulty, but well worth the effort for the stunning views of the waterfall and the surrounding mountains.
Next, we explore the Triple Falls Trail, which takes you past three beautiful waterfalls and offered stunning views of the forest. The trail is easy to navigate, making it a perfect option for families or those looking for a more leisurely hike.
For a more challenging hike, we venture to the Hooker Falls Trail, which included a steep climb to the top of a beautiful waterfall. The trail is strenuous, but the views from the top are unforgettable.
Aside from hiking, Dupont State Forest also offers a variety of other outdoor activities, including mountain biking, fishing, and horseback riding. The park is also home to several scenic picnic areas, making it a perfect spot for a relaxing day trip.
Overall, our experience in Dupont State Forest was one of awe and inspiration. The park’s natural beauty and variety of hiking trails make it a must-visit destination for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
