The Blue Ridge Parkway
A rainy-day hike through Smokemont and a scenic drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway.
We headed south on the Blue Ridge Parkway and found the drive every bit as beautiful as expected. Our destination was Smokemont in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, where we set out on the Tow String Trail.
The hike was a manageable 4.7 miles with about 725 feet of elevation gain, though recent rain made the muddy horse-trail sections more challenging. Parts of the route followed the Oconaluftee River, a particularly lovely companion for the day.
Even with wet boots, the Blue Ridge Parkway and Smokemont made for a rewarding day in the mountains. It is the kind of route that makes you want to return and follow the river a little farther next time.
