Cataloochee Divide Trail
We stuck close to home today and we hiked the Cataloochee Divide trail. This is a trail that runs on the Cataloochee Divide which is the eastern boundry for the Smokey Mountian Park. The Trail head is only about 1.5 miles up the mountian from the cabin as the crow flies, however it is 8 miles by road and about a half hour drive. The Trail starts at about 4,000 feet in elevation and we hiked in 3.5 miles to an elevation just short of 5,000 feet. There is not a lot of vista views on this trail but the ones you get are great. The whole length of the hike there was a split rail fence on the private side. I tried to find out the history of the fence as it looks to be anywhere from 50 to 100 years old and runs most of the 6.5 miles of the trail. There are several mentions of the fence but no history.
